Reminders to 5B Students:
1) Bring at least 2 blue pens, a sharpened pencil or a mechanical pencil, a ruler and a highlighter. Ideally, you should highlight the purpose, the sender and the recipient in the task box.
2) If you have correction tape, please bring it, If you do not have it, it is not the end of the world. Simply strike through your mistake with a ruler and a pen.
3) You should write the title in the middle of the first line before you write your composition. Do not go out of point. Write according to the theme or the topic
given. Make use of at least 1 picture. You do not have to make use of ALL 3
pictures. No extra marks given even if you use ALL 3 pictures.
4) For Situational Writing, if you are given a date range, please do not use "-".
Instead of "3 December 2016 - 6 December 2016", you should write
"From 3 December 2016 to 6 December 2016".
5) Do not use prepositions wrongly. A common mistake - "The venue where we will be rehearsing is at the school library." No! Write "The venue where we will be rehearsing is the school library."
6) Do NOT assume that the marker knows which point you are answering.
7) For composition writing, if possible, try to end off by doing a HFMD revolving around the theme. Need not follow HFMD in that order. It can be FHMD, FMDH, etc. It can also be only FHM, FHD, etc.
Example- Theme: A Kind Act
F - A wave of relief washed over me when I was informed that the little boy was out of danger.
H - I hoped that the little boy would have a speedy recovery.
M - That day when I went out of my way to help someone in need would be embedded in the recesses of my mind.
8) Please write an interesting story that is well-developed. If you write a super short story, be prepared to receive super low marks for content. Of course, if your story is long, you have to ensure you watch your time very well. Your story must also be logical.
9) Write neatly. Leave a line. For composition, write at least 5 paragraphs. First paragraph- intro, if you are stuck, you can start with a dialogue.
Example: "Let's go!" my best friend, Jack, called out to me as he skipped over with a grin on his face.
If the story started in school,
Example: Ring!!! The school dismissal bell resonated shrilly, signalling the end of lessons.
10) Lastly, remember use the slow-mo technique to elaborate on the MOST EXCITING part of the story. Use Outside, Inside and Action too.
When I heard the little boy scream, I jumped into the river to save him.
VS
I was caught in a dilemma. Should I go over to help the little boy? I was not a strong swimmer and the river water seemed deep. Rivulets of sweat trickled down my forehead as I contemplated risking my life for a complete stranger. My heart palpitated wildly against my ribcage. When his desperate screams for help pierced through the air, I decided that I could not turn a blind eye to the drowning boy. Taking a deep breath and putting the life buoy over my body, I dived into the swirling water.
